You may have seen on my website that one of the services I offer at Common Way Acupuncture, in addition to food therapy and acupuncture, are remote treatment sessions. What IS this? How does it work? Let me explain.
Remote sessions are essentially acupuncture treatment without needles. They are mutual meditation experiences. Acupuncture is an energy medicine in its origin. The first practitioners were shamans and treated people hands free, without needles. Diagnosing the imbalance, these early practitioners selected the appropriate “channel” or “meridian” to restore the function of that energetic passageway and bring about healing.
While I make no claims of being a shaman, I have learned distance-healing techniques from Ann Cecil-Sterman through her mentorship program in 2024. I admit that I was heavily skeptical at the start, wondering to myself, what I had signed up for–what kind of “woo-woo” snake oil had I bought into?! But over the course of six months, we watched and participated in the treatment and healing of a person who had a serious autoimmune diagnosis. And he happened to live in another country. It was one of the highlights of the mentorship for me and made me trust Classical Chinese Medicine even more deeply. This medicine is powerful beyond measure. It is a serious endeavor to practice and I am honored to share it with others.
Still people wonder: how does it work? The acupuncture channels live in all of us. Each of them creates a particular resonance—a kind of cosmic reverb. The connections we feel with others come through these energetic conduits. “The word for meridian in Chinese is ‘Jingluo’ which translates roughly as ‘threads that connect like a net’” (Leggett 37). They are fundamental to what we have in common as humans and this idea inspired me to name my practice Common Way Acupuncture.
The Ling Shu, an ancient medical text of Chinese Medicine, describes the channels as receptors of information not only among people, but also from the more-than-human environment: “from stars and planets, from the energy fields of land and its trees and plants, and from the Qi of other living beings” (Leggett 38). The meridians are passageways of influence that draw us to plants, animals, people and places. They enable our connection to the whole.
Another acupuncturist talking about and working in this energetic arena is Dr. Jill Blakeway. Her book Energy Medicine may satisfy the curiosity of the rational readers and seekers who want to know more in terms of scientific proof. In addition, the popular new podcast, “The Telepathy Tapes,” are generating much discussion as they explore the experiences of conscious connection and communication between Autistic children and their parents and beyond.
The beautiful thing about offering remote treatments is that it doesn’t matter if you live in the hi-desert of the Morongo Basin like me. You can be anywhere in the world to receive this powerful medicine. The logistical part is much like an in-person treatment: we set up a time to meet via zoom or phone call and talk about what health concerns you have. Based on that information—as well as tongue and pulse—I select a channel and we meditate on that passageway together. You simply need a comfortable place to rest.
